2025 S/S collection of ISSEY MIYAKE focuses on materials related to paper, with an emphasis on washi, exploring the sensory experiences that paper brings, from the texture that can be seen and touched to the emotional impact it has. What is the source of the comfort we feel when we touch paper, and how is this sensation conveyed? In response to these questions, extensive research was conducted on the history of paper, how it is made, and the craftsmanship involved in working with paper. This research led to various creative studies, which were incorporated into the garment creation process. The resulting clothing expresses the familiar and universal aspects of paper as the inspiration source, as well as its primitive and poetic qualities.
The stools placed in the exhibition space for the audience also reflect the concept of the collection. Made from thin paper masses, a byproduct of the pleating process at ISSEY MIYAKE, they reuse these materials. The cross-section of the paper, resembling tree rings, evokes the image of a log, with layers of thin paper stacked upon each other, conveying a sense of the passage of time.
To convey the concept of the collection, a paper garment (kamiko) made from hemp paper (mashi), crafted from fine hemp fibers, was created. This garment, which began as a prototype as part of the research, embodies the intention to continue the tradition of Japanese paper-making and its deep-rooted presence in Japanese life. Through this collection, it has been transformed into a new form.
