An official catalogue published for the exhibition “Kengo Kuma: a LAB for materials” held at Tokyo Station Gallery in 2018. Focusing on the materials that Kuma has had dialogues with through his works for the past 30 years, this project tries to classifies and organizes by major materials (bamboo, wood, paper, stone, soil, etc.) and obtains overview from the perspective of “things.” The specification of the book is often seen as magazine format with matte coated paper, but its unique materiality is expressed by wrapping with the thin, textured Japanese paper that Kuma often uses. In the body text, illustrations are designed in a large size to maximize the texture of the material and the space in which it is laid out.
